What is Smoky Quartz?

Smoky Quartz is a variety of Quartz — Silicon Dioxide (SiO₂) — whose characteristic smoky brown to grey colour is produced by one of the most extraordinary and most unique colour formation processes in the entire mineral world: natural irradiation. Over millions of years deep within the earth, natural background radiation from surrounding rocks activates trace aluminium impurities within the quartz crystal structure — transforming what would otherwise be a colourless Clear Quartz (Sphatik) into the range of warm, smoky brown tones for which this crystal is celebrated.
