What is Malachite?

Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide mineral (Cu₂(CO₃)(OH)₂) — formed when carbon-rich water reacts with copper-bearing rocks deep within the earth. Its name comes from the Greek word 'Malakos' meaning soft — and also from 'Malache' referring to the mallow plant, whose leaves share the same vivid, rich green. Its extraordinary green colour — ranging from pale mint green to the deepest forest green — comes entirely from its copper content, making it one of the most vividly and naturally coloured minerals in the world. Malachite ranks 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale — relatively soft, requiring thoughtful handling and care.
