What is Sunstone?

Sunstone is a variety of oligoclase feldspar — a member of the large and diverse Feldspar mineral family that makes up a significant portion of the earth's crust. Its warm colour palette — ranging from pale peach and golden yellow to vivid orange and deep reddish-brown — comes from tiny plate-like inclusions of hematite or goethite within the crystal structure. These same inclusions are responsible for Sunstone's most extraordinary characteristic — its unique optical phenomenon called aventurescence. Sunstone ranks 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale — good durability, suitable for all Jewellery forms including rings, pendants, and bracelets.
