Rudraksha Do's and Don'ts

Rudraksha is a sacred gift from Lord Shiva — and wearing it with the right understanding, the right intention, and the right care ensures that its full spiritual and personal benefits are received. There are many myths, doubts, and questions surrounding the wearing of Rudraksha — particularly in India where cultural beliefs sometimes create unnecessary fear and confusion.

Here are the most important and most frequently asked Do's and Don'ts, based on the guidance of our ancient scriptures.

Who Can Wear Rudraksha

• Rudraksha can be worn by everyone — men, women, children, elders — of all religions, all castes, and all walks of life. There is no restriction based on gender, age, caste, or faith anywhere in the Vedic scriptures
• Women can wear Rudraksha — including during menstruation. The ancient scriptures do not place any restriction on women wearing Rudraksha at any time. The Srimad Devi Bhagavatam specifically supports the continuous wearing of Rudraksha for all. Women who prefer to remove it during this time may do so as a personal choice — but it is not a scriptural requirement
• Goddess Parvati herself wore Rudraksha — making the idea that women cannot wear it not only a myth but a contradiction of the divine example set by the Mother Goddess herself

Non-Vegetarian Food and Alcohol

This is one of the most frequently asked questions about Rudraksha wearing in India. According to the Vedic scriptures — including the Srimad Devi Bhagavatam — there is no scriptural prohibition on wearing Rudraksha while consuming non-vegetarian food or alcohol. Lord Shiva himself is beyond such restrictions.

However, the scriptures consistently recommend a Sattvic (pure, clean, balanced) lifestyle for those who wish to receive the maximum possible benefit from their Rudraksha. A Sattvic lifestyle — including vegetarian food, avoidance of intoxicants, regular meditation, and sincere spiritual practice — creates the optimal inner environment for Rudraksha's energy to work at its fullest potency. It is a recommendation for maximum benefit, not a rule for wearing.

Sleeping with Rudraksha

There are two respected schools of thought on this question. Some Vedic authorities recommend wearing Rudraksha 24 hours a day — including during sleep — for continuous and uninterrupted divine energy.

Others recommend removing Rudraksha before sleeping — primarily for practical reasons: Rudraksha beads have a naturally rough surface that can scratch or irritate the skin during restless sleep, and the thread or chain can break under the physical stress of sleep movements.

Important Do's

• Wear with sincere faith and genuine intention — the quality of the wearer's intention is the most important factor in Rudraksha's effectiveness
• Keep your Rudraksha clean — wipe regularly with a soft dry cloth; occasionally apply a small amount of oil to maintain the bead's natural moisture and lustre
• Energise periodically — re-energise by chanting Om Namah Shivaya 11 times, particularly on Mondays
• Keep personal — Rudraksha gradually aligns itself with the wearer's unique energy; do not share your Rudraksha with others or allow others to wear it

Important Don'ts

• Do not wear broken or damaged Rudraksha — a cracked or damaged bead should be respectfully disposed of by burying it in clean earth or immersing in a natural body of water
• Do not use soap, chemical detergents, perfumes, or hair products directly on your Rudraksha — these can damage the surface of the bead over time
• Do not purchase Rudraksha without certification — in a market where imitation beads are widespread, buying without authentic certification is a significant spiritual and financial risk
