Red Garnet Quality & Price

The quality and value of any stone is evaluated on certain parameters.

  • Origin -

Red garnets are found all over the world, with deposits on almost each continent. Red Garnets are abundantly mined in Brazil, India and Africa. Red Garnets from Orissa, India are very popular, however they lack in quality. African Garnets are fairly better. Currently, Africa is on.e of the largest supplier of fine-quality red garnets.
  • Colour -

Red Garnet is primarily red in colour and the shades range from deep translucent red to very deep, almost blackish-red. Red Garnets can also have hints of orange, pink grey and brown. Pyrope Garnet is the most popular of the red varieties as it has the desired rich red pomegranate colour. Almandine is another species of red garnet that comes in shades ranging from range in colour from dark red to black. For astrological purposes, one should go for deep pure red tones.
  • Clarity -

Pyrope Garnet comes inclusion-free while Almandine Garnets are usually opaque. Eye clean Red Garnet is preferred for astrological purposes. Eye clean refers to gemstones that have minimum, small-sized, cornered or light-colored inclusions which makes it difficult to see the inclusion with the naked eye. As a matter of fact, natural gemstones have inclusions. Only synthetic gemstones are 100% inclusion-free.
  • Cut -

These stones are most preferred in oval-mixed shapes as the colour and lustre come out beautifully. Other fancy shapes like marquise, trillion or round shapes are also available but they are not as popular.

What is the difference between Red Garnet and Hessonite Garnet?

Garnet is the name of a gemstone family which comprises of several types of garnets such as Pyrope, Almandine, Tsavorite, Hessonite, Spessartine, Demantoid, Andradite. And hence, there are wide range of colours available in garnet stones. It is possible to find garnet in almost all colours like yellow, pink, red, orange, green, black, etc. All Garnets have essentially the same crystal structure, but they vary in chemical composition. Out of these the varieties of Red Garnets and Hessonite are the most popular, easily-available and very useful for astrological purposes. Hessonite is grossular type of garnet stone and its colour tones range from honey-yellow to deep reddish brown. It is a very important stone in Vedic astrology as it is one of the nine planetary gemstones. It is associated with the Rahu planet. It brings stability & growth in business, career and personal endeavours. Red Garnet is primarily red in colour and the shades range from deep translucent red to very deep almost red-black. Red Garnet is mainly used for Sun and is the best substitute for Ruby stone. It helps in regulating the blood circulatory system, strengthening the heart, and boosting immunity. Red Garnet is a mild substitute of Ruby (which is a planetary stone). Red garnet can be worn by anyone but Hessonite garnet (which is a planetary stone) should be worn only if recommended.

What are the different varieties of Red Garnets?

Pyrope (primarily red) and Almandine (dark red to black-red) are the main varieties of Red Garnets. Other than these there are red Spessartine (orange to orange-red) and red Rhodolite (pink to purplish red) but they are very rare as other colours tend to be dominant in these varieties.

What is the difference between Pyrope Garnet and Almandine Garnet?

Pyrope is the only member of the garnet family to always display red colouration in natural samples. Its chemical composition is of a magnesium aluminium silicate. Pyrope gemstones are often very clean and can be totally free of flaws and inclusions.
Almandine is almost invariably dark in colour and it forms dark red to reddish-brown gemstones and the pure deep red colour is its most valuable. Its chemical composition is of an iron aluminium silicate. Almandine stones are usually opaque.

Why are gems sold in market called Almandine, Pyrope?

All Garnets are hybrids of various Garnet species as the chemistry of different Garnet species mix and blend while they are being geologically formed. Thus pure Almandines and Pyropes are not known to exist in nature. Almandines generally contain significant amounts of Pyrope and vice- versa.
The average Almandine gem contains approximately 66% Almandine (iron composition) and 34% Pyrope Garnet (magnesium composition). Pyropes contain an average of 74% Pyrope and 26% Almandine. Gems that have nearly 50% Almandine and 50% Pyrope are called Rhodolite Garnets.

What is Rhodolite Garnet?

Rhodolite garnet is a rose-pink, raspberry-red or purplish-red garnet. It is a mix of Pyrope and Almandine in almost equal compositions.
