What is Tourmaline?

Tourmaline is a group of closely related complex boron silicate minerals that share the same trigonal crystal structure but differ in their chemical composition — with varying concentrations of elements including iron, manganese, chromium, copper, vanadium, lithium, and sodium creating the extraordinary spectrum of colours for which this gemstone family is celebrated. The principal Tourmaline species include Elbaite (the source of most gem-quality coloured tourmalines), Schorl (black tourmaline — the most abundant species), Dravite (brown tourmaline), Liddicoatite, and Uvite. Tourmaline ranks 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale — excellent hardness and durability for all forms of fine jewellery.

One of Tourmaline's most remarkable scientific properties is its piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity — it generates an electric charge when subjected to mechanical pressure or heat, and when charged, one end of the crystal becomes positive and the other negative, allowing it to attract dust and small particles. Dutch traders of the 1700s called it 'Aschentrekker' — the 'ash puller' — because they used heated Tourmaline to draw ash from their pipes. Today, these same electrical properties make Tourmaline a valuable material in scientific instruments, pressure gauges, and various technological applications — making it one of the very few gemstones that bridges the worlds of healing, jewellery, and modern technology with equal distinction.

A Spanish conquistador mistook Green Tourmaline for Emerald in Brazil: When Spanish explorers first encountered vivid Green Tourmaline in Brazil, they were convinced they had found emeralds of exceptional quality — and the stones were treated and valued as such for many years before their true identity as Tourmaline was established. This historical confusion between the finest Green Tourmaline and Emerald is entirely understandable — Chrome Tourmaline in particular can display a green of such intensity and depth that even trained gemologists have been known to pause before making their identification. The comparison to Emerald is one of the highest possible compliments in the gemstone world.

Paraiba Tourmaline — discovered in 1989 — became instantly the world's most valuable Tourmaline: The discovery of neon blue-green Tourmaline in the Brazilian state of Paraíba in 1989 caused an immediate sensation in the international gem world — its extraordinary electric, neon blue-green colour unlike anything previously seen in any gemstone was caused by the presence of copper within the crystal structure. Fine Paraiba Tourmaline can command prices exceeding Rs. 800,000 per carat — making it one of the most expensive gemstones in the world — far exceeding the price of fine Diamonds, Rubies, or Sapphires of equivalent weight. Paraiba has since been found in Nigeria and Mozambique, but Brazilian Paraiba remains the most celebrated and most valuable.

Tourmaline can display multiple colours within a single crystal: One of Tourmaline's most extraordinary and most unique natural properties is its ability to display two or more entirely different colours within the same crystal — caused by changes in the chemical environment during crystal growth. The most celebrated example is Watermelon Tourmaline — a single crystal displaying a vivid pink centre surrounded by a green outer layer, like a slice of watermelon. Other bi-colour combinations include green-blue, pink-green, and colourless-pink — each entirely natural and entirely the product of the remarkable geological conditions within which Tourmaline's complex chemistry unfolds over millions of years.

Nigeria and Mozambique produce Copper-bearing Tourmaline similar to Brazilian Paraiba.
