What is Pyrite?

Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with the chemical formula FeS₂ — composed of iron and sulfur atoms in a precise 1:2 ratio, with two sulfur atoms bonded to every one iron atom. It is the most abundant sulfide mineral on earth, forming across an extraordinary range of geological environments: crystallising from hydrothermal fluids deep in the earth's crust, precipitating in marine sedimentary basins, growing during metamorphic processes, and even replacing the soft tissues and shells of ancient organisms during fossilisation — making Pyrite one of the most geologically widespread and geologically significant minerals known to science.

Pyrite crystallises in the isometric cubic system — and this is where it becomes truly extraordinary. Its natural crystal forms are among the most geometrically precise and most visually dramatic in the entire mineral world: perfectly formed cubes with mirror-bright faces, multifaceted pyritohedra (twelve-sided forms), octahedra, and combinations of these shapes that appear almost too perfectly geometric to be natural. Archaeological discoveries from ancient Mesoamerica — particularly among the Aztec civilisation — have found polished Pyrite discs and Pyrite-inlaid mirrors used both as practical reflective tools and as sacred objects in religious and ceremonial contexts. The ability of Pyrite to reflect the human face — to show back to a person their own image — combined with its golden, sun-like colour and its fire-producing quality gave it a powerful sacred significance in cultures that associated gold and fire with the divine and the solar.

Pyrite crystals from Navajun, Spain appear too perfect to be natural: Among the most celebrated and most visually extraordinary natural mineral specimens in the world are the cubic Pyrite crystals from the Victoria Mine at Navajún in the La Rioja region of Spain. These crystals form in such geometrically precise, razor-sharp, mirror-faced perfect cubes that every person who sees them for the first time instinctively assumes they must have been cut, polished, or artificially shaped. They have not — they emerge from the ground in exactly this form, products of the exceptionally stable hydrothermal conditions of the Navajún geological environment. The largest single cubic Pyrite crystal ever found measured over 19 centimetres across and weighed 9.5 kilograms. Collectors and mineralogists worldwide consider Navajún cubic Pyrite to be among the most extraordinary natural mineral specimens on earth.

Victorian jewellery sold as Marcasite is almost always actually Pyrite: One of the most widespread and most persistent misidentifications in the history of jewellery is the use of the term marcasite to describe the small, faceted, metallic pieces set in silver jewellery — particularly the elaborately crafted decorative jewellery of the Victorian era. Marcasite, in jewellery terminology, has historically referred to iron sulfide — but the mineral actually used in these jewellery pieces is Pyrite, not the true mineral marcasite (which is also FeS₂ but in a different crystal structure, too brittle and too chemically unstable for jewellery use). Genuine marcasite jewellery does not actually contain the mineral marcasite — it contains Pyrite. The use of Pyrite in jewellery under the marcasite name has been standard practice for centuries and continues to this day.

Pyrite is one of the most important indicator minerals for gold deposits: Beyond their geological co-occurrence, Pyrite and gold share a profound practical relationship in mining: the presence of Pyrite in rock formations is one of the most reliable indicators that gold may also be present in the same geological environment. Experienced prospectors and mining geologists have long used Pyrite as an indicator mineral — a sign that the hydrothermal conditions that produce Pyrite may also have produced gold in the same location. The Gold Rush prospectors who dismissed Pyrite as worthless Fool's Gold were, in many cases, within metres of genuine gold deposits indicated by the very Pyrite they were ignoring.
