A Lot of People get confused between the terms Karat & Carat. These words sound very similar but their meanings are totally different. Both terms are commonly used in the jewellery and gemstone industry, but they represent two completely different measurements.
‘Karat’ (K) is used to denote the purity of gold. Pure gold is considered 24 Karat gold. Similarly, 22K gold means the metal contains 22 parts pure gold and 2 parts other metals. Likewise, 18K gold means 75% purity of gold. Lower karat gold contains a higher percentage of alloy metals, which improves durability and strength for jewellery making.
The term ‘Carat’, on the other hand, is a unit of weight used to weigh gemstones and diamonds. The weight of gemstones and diamonds is always measured in carats. It is a globally accepted standard unit used by gemstone traders and jewellers worldwide.
One carat consists of 100 cents, also called points. For example, a 50-pointer diamond means the diamond weighs 0.50 carat, while a 70-pointer solitaire means the diamond weighs 0.70 carat.
1 Carat = 0.200 Gram / 200 milligram
Or 1 Gram = 5 Carat
There are special weighing scales to take carat weight of precious stones. These scales need to be very accurate, precise & calibrated. Because even a small variation in weight can lead to big difference in their value & price.
Also, in the gemstone industry, larger stones are generally rarer and more valuable, ‘The higher the carat weight, the higher the rate per carat.’
It is also important to understand that carat weight does not always determine the visible size of a gemstone. Two gemstones with the same carat weight may appear different in size depending on their density, cut, shape, and proportions. herefore, the higher the carat weight, the higher the price per carat. For example, a 2-carat natural diamond is not simply double the price of a 1-carat diamond; it can often cost several times more because large natural diamonds are much rarer to find.
So, Karat & Carat may sound similar, but their meanings are completely different. Karat refers to the purity of gold, whereas Carat refers to the weight of gemstones and diamonds.
