What is Labradorite?

Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar mineral belonging to the same Feldspar family as Moonstone and Sunstone — making them natural sister stones, each carrying a distinctly different energy. Labradorite was first discovered in 1770 by a Moravian missionary on the Isle of Paul near the Labrador Peninsula in Canada — and was named after this dramatic, rugged Canadian landscape. It ranks 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale — good durability, suitable for all jewellery forms. At first glance, Labradorite appears as a dark, grey-green, or dark blue-grey stone — quietly unassuming. But when light strikes its internal lamellar structure, it transforms completely — revealing the breathtaking iridescent display that has made it one of the most celebrated and most beloved crystals in the world.

Labradorescence — The Magic Within

Labradorescence is Labradorite's signature optical phenomenon — and one of the most extraordinary and most beautiful optical effects found anywhere in the natural mineral world. Unlike aventurescence (seen in Sunstone), which is caused by surface-level reflective inclusions, or adularescence (seen in Moonstone), which is a soft floating glow — labradorescence is caused by light diffracting within microscopic lamellar intergrowths — alternating layers of different feldspar compositions — deep within the crystal's internal structure.

As light enters the stone and strikes these internal layers, it is scattered and diffracted — producing a spectacular, shifting display of colour that changes dramatically with every slight movement of the stone or change in the angle of light. The colours produced — electric blue, vivid teal, golden yellow, copper orange, and occasional violet or green — are not surface colours at all. They exist entirely within the stone's internal structure, appearing to float at different depths within the crystal — creating a three-dimensional, living colour display that is unlike anything else in the natural gemstone world.

The Inuit legend — the Northern Lights captured in stone: The indigenous Inuit people of Canada held a beautiful and deeply moving legend about Labradorite — they believed that the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) once became trapped within the rocks of the Labrador coastline. According to the legend, an Inuit warrior struck the rocks with his spear to free the lights — and most of the Aurora flew back into the sky to become the Northern Lights we see today. But some of the light remained trapped within the stone — and that is why Labradorite shimmers and flashes with the colours of the Aurora to this day. It is one of the most poetic and most beautiful origin stories of any crystal in the world.

Spectrolite — the rarest and most extraordinary Labradorite variety: In the 1940s, while building military defence lines on Finland's eastern border during World War II, workers accidentally discovered an extraordinary variety of Labradorite that displayed the entire visible colour spectrum — vivid reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and violets — all in a single stone. This remarkable variety was named Spectrolite and is found only in Finland. A wartime accident led to the discovery of one of the most visually spectacular mineral varieties ever found — a reminder that the most extraordinary things are often found in the most unexpected moments.
