Pearl Care and Cleaning

Pearl is one of the most beautiful and most energetically resonant of all organic gemstones — and also one of the most delicate. With a Mohs hardness of only 2.5 to 4.5, pearl is significantly softer than most other gemstones and requires consistent, gentle care to maintain its lustre, its nacre integrity, and its astrological potency. The good news is that pearl care is simple — it requires no special equipment and very little time — and a few consistent daily habits are all that is needed to keep your pearl jewellery as beautiful and as energetically active as the day you received it.

The Golden Rule — Last On, First Off

The single most important pearl care habit is simple: put your pearl jewellery on last when getting ready — after all perfumes, hairsprays, cosmetics, and other products have been applied and dried — and remove it first when you return home. This one habit protects your pearl from the vast majority of the chemical exposure that causes nacre damage over time.

Daily Wear Guidelines

• Remove before bathing and showering — water and soap gradually erode nacre; even brief repeated exposure accumulates damage over time
• Remove before swimming — chlorine in swimming pools is particularly damaging to pearl nacre and must be completely avoided
• Remove before exercising and physical work — sweat contains acids that erode nacre; impact and abrasion can chip and scratch the surface
• Avoid all contact with perfumes, hairsprays, cosmetics, lotions, and cleaning products — even small amounts cause irreversible nacre damage with repeated exposure

Cleaning Your Pearl Jewellery

• After each wear — gently wipe with a very soft, clean, slightly damp cloth to remove accumulated skin oils and perspiration; this simple step is the single most effective way to maintain long-term pearl lustre
• Never use any chemical cleaner, household cleaning solution, ultrasonic cleaner, or steam cleaner on pearl jewellery — these permanently and irreversibly damage nacre
• If deeper cleaning is needed — use only a soft cloth very lightly dampened with clean water; never soak or immerse pearl jewellery

Storage

• Store in a soft silk or velvet pouch — separate from all other gemstones, metals, and jewellery that could scratch the delicate nacre surface
• Never store in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag — pearls are organic and require a small amount of ambient moisture; airtight storage causes dehydration and surface crazing
• Keep away from direct sunlight and extreme heat or cold — these accelerate nacre deterioration
