Tiger Eye is a variety of Chalcedony Quartz (Silicon Dioxide — SiO₂) distinguished by its parallel fibrous crystal structure — thousands of microscopic mineral fibres aligned in the same direction throughout the stone, creating the two optical phenomena for which it is most celebrated: its extraordinary chatoyancy and its characteristic silky lustre. Its warm golden-brown to reddish-brown colour range is produced by iron oxide (limonite) within the fibrous structure — the specific tone varying from pale golden yellow to deep honey-brown and rich reddish-brown depending on the concentration and oxidation state of the iron.
