What is Carnelian?

Carnelian is a variety of Chalcedony — a cryptocrystalline form of Quartz (Silicon Dioxide — SiO₂) — coloured by iron oxide impurities within its microcrystalline structure. The specific concentration and oxidation state of the iron determines the colour — from the palest, most delicate soft orange through vivid bright tangerine and warm amber to the deepest, richest reddish-brown. Its name is derived from the Latin word 'caro' meaning flesh — a reference to its most characteristic warm, flesh-toned orange colour that has inspired admiration since antiquity. Carnelian ranks 7 on the Mohs scale — excellent durability, perfectly suited for all jewellery forms and daily wear.
