Black Tourmaline is the black variety of the Tourmaline mineral group — a complex borosilicate mineral family whose name derives from the Sinhalese word turamali, meaning stone of mixed colours, reflecting the extraordinary colour range found across the tourmaline family. Within this diverse family, Schorl — the scientific name for Black Tourmaline, derived from an old German word for black — is by far the most abundant variety, estimated to account for approximately 95 percent of all tourmaline found in nature. Its chemical composition is Sodium Iron Aluminium Borosilicate — NaFe₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄ — with the iron content being primarily responsible for its characteristic deep, opaque, intensely black colour.

Black Tourmaline forms in granitic pegmatites and in metamorphic rocks, typically growing in distinctive prismatic crystals with characteristic vertical striations running along the length of the crystal — a visual feature that is one of the most reliable identifiers of genuine Tourmaline in its natural form.
