Ruby (Manik) Price Guide

Ruby (Manik) Price Guide

Ruby (also known as Manik in Hindi) is called the king of gems and therefore has a good command and value in the market. If you wish to buy Ruby for any particular reason, the most important thing you must keep in mind before making a purchase is that you are buying a real and authentic gemstone at a fair price. Therefore, it is highly recommended that before buying, you must acquaint yourself a little knowledge about how Ruby pricing is done and how it can vary in the market. Just like the other gemstones available in the market, the price of a Ruby stone is dependant on four major parameters which are also commonly known as the 4C’s i.e. colour, carat, clarity and cut. However, there are other factors also which heavily influence and cater to the pricing of Ruby such as the origin place of the gemstone, rarity and demand in the market.

Therefore, to make your purchase of a Ruby stone an easy process, we bring you the following important factors which you should always consider and keep in mind before buying it.

Origin

While pricing a Ruby gemstone, origin plays a big role. A certified and authentic Ruby from a particular origin will always cost high as compared to the ones from an undefined origin of place, even if you can see no big difference in the quality of both the gemstones.

Generally, the most highly priced Ruby stones are from Burma (Myanmar) and Africa as the best quality stones with good clarity and colour are mined from these regions. The value of these stones will always remain higher as compared to the ones with the origin of India and Thailand.

Burmese Ruby is the most precious & expensive Ruby because of its exceptional color similar to that of the pigeon’s blood. Burmese Ruby price range starts from Rs 50,000 ($700). Due to scarcity and high prices of Burmese Ruby, the next best option is the African Ruby which costs between Rs 5,000 and Rs 1,00,000 ($70 to $1300).

Color

Color contributes most to overall quality of Ruby, thus color majorly impacts the price. The presence of chromium in Ruby has been responsible for the color of the stone. The increase in chromium leads to a darker shade while the low chromium leads to the lighter shade of red. Vivid red similar to pigeon blood color in Ruby is most desirable and expensive. Pure red Rubies are better than Rubies with pinkish to purplish tones and price decreases in same manner. Most important point to be noted is that the color should be natural & not artificially enhanced. Rubies are often treated for color enhancement, but such stones are not recommended for astrological purposes. Thus, one should one buy authentic stones from a renowned gem stone expert.

Carat

While wearing any gemstone, it is important to know how many carats (ratti) is the ideal weight of the stone as the power of gems is entirely dependent on its weight and size. Ideally, it is said and observed that one carat for 12 kgs is perfect that is a 60 kg person should wear 5 carat of Ruby ring/pendant. The price per carat of the Ruby increases with the increasing carats.

Clarity

Like most natural Gemstones, Ruby has natural inclusions. Fewer and smaller inclusions lead to better clarity and thus a higher price. Ruby with non visible inclusions are extremely rare & expensive. Low quality stones are often treated for clarity enhancement and common treatments in Ruby are Heating and Glass Filling. Thus, it is highly recommended to buy certified Ruby stones.

Cut

The cut is also very important while fixing the price of a Ruby gemstone or any other gemstone as well. The cut and finish of the stone depicts the quality and sheen of the gemstone and therefore the more finished and smooth the gemstone, the more pricing it will have in the market. Highly faceted gemstones are more expensive than the poorly cut stones due to the extra stone wastage, labor & other costs incurred in the process. A finely cut and faceted Ruby appears much brighter, illuminated, consistently colored than badly cut Ruby of same color and clarity.

Certificate

If you buy a gemstone from a reputed and trusted gemstone expert, then they will surely give you a certificate from a reputed laboratory. This certificate will ensure the quality, origin, color and cut of the stone.
